Can you do physical therapy at home after knee replacement?

Yes!  But, it should always involve a doctor of physical therapy, not just doing it on your own following random YouTube videos.  If you want to regain your full knee range of motion and get back to moving normally, you should definitely work with an expert doctor of physical therapy.

(We happen to offer this specialized service in the privacy and convenience of your home apartment in the New York City area.)

Knee replacement surgery is a common procedure for people who suffer from knee pain and mobility issues. After surgery, physical therapy is essential to help patients regain strength, mobility, and range of motion. While many patients receive physical therapy in an office clinic, research has shown that it is possible to do physical therapy at home after knee replacement surgery.

In fact, studies have shown that in-home physical therapy can be just as effective as office clinic physical therapy for knee replacement patients.

One study published in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery found that patients who did in-home physical therapy had similar outcomes in terms of range of motion and pain levels as those who received office clinic physical therapy. The study also found that patients who did in-home physical therapy were more satisfied with their treatment and had fewer missed appointments.

The benefits of in-home physical therapy after knee replacement surgery are numerous. First and foremost, it allows patients to recover in the comfort of their own homes, which can be more convenient and less stressful than traveling to an office clinic. In-home physical therapy also allows for more personalized attention from a physical therapist, who can tailor exercises and treatment to the patient's specific needs and limitations.

At Concierge Pain Relief - Home Physical Therapy, we specialize in providing hands-on PT treatment in the comfort of our patients' homes. Our team of experienced physical therapists works closely with patients to develop personalized treatment plans that are tailored to their specific needs and goals. We understand that knee replacement surgery can be a challenging and painful experience, which is why we strive to provide compassionate, effective care to help our patients recover and regain their mobility.

In addition to in-home physical therapy, there are several exercises and stretches that knee replacement patients can do at home to aid in their recovery.

These exercises include:

1.)  Straight Leg Raises - Lie on your back with your legs straight. Lift one leg off the ground, keeping it straight, and hold for a few seconds before lowering it back down. Repeat with the other leg.

2.) Heel Slides - Lie on your back with your legs straight. Slowly slide one heel towards your buttocks, bending your knee as you go. Hold for a few seconds before sliding your leg back out straight. Repeat with the other leg.

3.) Calf Raises - Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding onto a chair or countertop for support. Raise up onto your tiptoes, then slowly lower back down.

4.) Wall Squats - Stand with your back against a wall, feet shoulder-width apart. Slowly lower yourself into a squat, keeping your back against the wall and your knees over your ankles. Hold for a few seconds before standing back up.

It's important to note that while these exercises can be beneficial for knee replacement patients, it's crucial to consult with a doctor of physical therapy before starting any new exercises or stretches. A physical therapist can assess your specific needs and limitations and develop a safe and effective exercise plan for you.

In conclusion, in-home physical therapy can be just as effective as office clinic physical therapy for knee replacement patients. In-home physical therapy offers numerous benefits, including convenience, personalized attention, and increased patient satisfaction.

At Concierge Pain Relief - Home Physical Therapy, we specialize in providing hands-on PT treatment in the comfort of our patients' home apartments or their office workplace.  And, we work closely with each patient to develop personalized treatment plans that are tailored to their specific needs and goals. If you're recovering from knee replacement surgery and are interested in in-home physical therapy, contact us today to learn more and get back to moving around better than before your knee replacement.
